The chess game between Boris Spassky and David Bronstein in Leningrad in 1960 is often regarded as one of the greatest King’s Gambits ever played. Spassky, who was playing with the white pieces, was a rising star in the chess world, while Bronstein was an experienced grandmaster who had previously challenged for the World Chess Championship.
Fun fact: This game was featured in the James Bond film From Russia With Love (1963). One of the antagonists, the Number Five in SPECTRE, named Kronsteen, beat his opponent in the Spassky style, and received an enthusiastic ovation from the audience before descending into a secret hideout to report to Blofeld, the criminal mastermind.
