Named after a Danish amateur chess player who discussed this variation in correspondence with the German chess magazine Deutsche Schachzeitung in 1880. The move then fell into oblivion until recently (2013) Scottish Grandmaster John K. Shaw recommended it in his book on the King’s Gambit. White does not try to win back the gambit pawn as ostentatiously as in other variants, and prefers to develop the other pieces.
