The Tarrasch Trap is a chess opening strategy in the Ruy Lopez opening, named after Siegbert Tarrasch, the strongest players and most influential theoreticians of the late 19th and early 20th century. What sets this trap apart from other variations is that Tarrasch successfully executed it against skilled opponents during tournament matches, rather than solely in theoretical analysis.
In fact, two masters, Johannes Zukertort and Isidor Gunsberg, were ensnared by this trap while playing against Tarrasch, with Zukertort falling into it at Frankfurt in 1887 and Gunsberg at Manchester in 1890.
